Gunfire at Waikele Premium Outlets

Honolulu police are looking for the two masked men who tried to rob a jewelry store at the Waikele Premium outlets.

Police say around 8:40 Saturday night, the men in their 20's went in armed with a hammer and gun.

One of the men tried to hammer one of the glass cases open, but the glass didn't crack.

The other man tried to shoot at it, and was also unsuccessful.

They both left in a vehicle, but witnesses got the license number.

Police later found the car, engulfed in flames.

Police also say the car was reported as a stolen vehicle.

Wrentham Proposed Outlet Agreement Change

By Mike Gleason - Wrentham Patch

The town Board of Selectmen said further consultation is needed before it would decide on a change to the Wrentham Premium Outlets host-town agreement.

The outlet company is looking to reduce the size of a police office in the complex.

"The [host] agreement provides for a small office for the police department," Town Administrator William Ketcham said. "What they're seeking to do is change the size of the lot."

Ketcham said, though, that he believed the town would have to amend both the host-town agreement and the outlets' special permit for the change to move forward.

"Process-wise, I don't believe the board can modify this without including the Planning Board in the process," he said. "If the board wishes to move forward with this, I would recommend a consultation with town counsel."

Board member Stephen Langley said he believed the selectmen had authority over the matter.

New board member Michael Carroll said he was concerned about the change, saying he was unsure whether Police Chief James Anderson would approve of the change. He said he had spoken to the chief earlier, and that he had expressed misgivings about reducing the size of the office without getting a concession from the outlet company.

An outlet representative at the meeting said the office had not been used in 11 years.

Board Chairman Joseph Botaish said he would like to get input from Anderson, and consult with town counsel on the matter.

Carpenters union pickets near Woodbury Common

by Christian Livermore - Times Herald Record

A small group of protesters picketed Tuesday outside the entrance of Woodbury Common Premium Outlets.

The workers were protesting what officials at the Empire State Regional Council of Carpenters say is the failure of several stores within the Common to pay the prevailing wage for carpenters working on renovations and other projects being done in their stores.

The stores are paying 40 to 50 percent below the prevailing wage, which should be about $53 an hour including health benefits, said Daniel Souza, the union's Southeast Region Team Leader for Westchester County.

A Woodbury Common spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment.

Armed Robbery at Desert Hills Premium Outlets

The store was staffed by a single employee, and there were no customers present at the time, Sgt. James Burton said. The store's lone worker wasn't harmed.

The suspect was described as a Latino man about 5 feet 7 inches tall and 160 pounds. He was wearing a black beanie, black pants and a black scarf over his face.

Earlier this month, the Federal Trade Commission approved a final order that Simon Property Group must sell either Cincinnati Premium Outlets in Monroe or Prime Outlets-Jeffersonville, but the company hasn’t disclosed which property it will sell.

“We fully intend to comply with the consent agreement but have no update to report at this time,” said Michele Rothstein, a Premium Outlets spokeswoman.

Simon Property Group, based in Indianapolis, has until July 21 to sell one of the properties, said Joe Lipinsky, staff attorney for the FTC.

Hagerstown L.L. Bean store to close

By Ric Dugan/Staff Photographer

Outdoor equipment and apparel retailer L.L.Bean will close its Hagerstown outlet store on April 30, a spokeswoman said.

Public Affairs Manager Carolyn Beem said the company will close the store at Hagerstown Premium Outlets after 10 years of operation despite a successful year companywide.

“Closing a store is never an easy decision to make,” she said. “Based on a number of factors it was decided to close this store.”

Beem said L.L.Bean is not planning to close any other outlet or retail stores in connection with the Hagerstown closure.

“We evaluate each store individually,” she said.

Beem said the decision to close the Hagerstown Premium Outlets location was based on factors she would not detail.

However, she said that while the company overall had a good year in 2010, Hagerstown was not one of its top locations for sales.

“We had a great run there, 10 years,” she said. “We have dedicated staff and great customers, it was just not a high-performing store.”

The approximately 50 employees who work at the outlet store were informed in the fall of 2010 about the impending closure, Beem said.

She said the company will work with those employees on possible placements at other L.L.Bean stores. The nearest outlet stores are in Queenstown, Md., and Williamsburg, Va.  The nearest retail store is Columbia, Md., she said.

According to its website, the company has closed one other outlet store in Portland, Maine.
Once the Hagerstown outlet closes, L.L.Bean will have 12 outlet stores, according to the website www.llbean.com.

L.L.Bean was founded in 1912 by Leon Leonwood Bean and has grown to include online, catalog, retail and outlet sales, the site said.

Las Vegas Outlet goes Premium.

By Jennifer Robison - LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

A major local outlet mall is receiving a high-end makeover.

Simon Property Group is refashioning its Las Vegas Outlet Center, at 7400 Las Vegas Blvd. South, into an upscale shopping destination similar to the Las Vegas Premium Outlets center it owns downtown. The company is even renaming both properties to reflect the changes, anointing them Las Vegas Premium Outlets-South and Las Vegas Premium Outlets-North. The expansion of the southern center is scheduled to open for business on March 17, after nine months of construction.

"We are pleased to be expanding Las Vegas Premium Outlets-South not only to fulfill merchant demand for space, but also to satisfy shoppers' desire to have an even greater selection of brands at impressive savings," said Alexandra Goranson, area marketing director for Simon's Premium Outlets portfolio, in a statement. "We are thrilled that our center is providing new and exciting outlet stores, as well as supporting the community by creating new jobs and assisting in the overall economic growth for the area."

Improvements at the Las Vegas Boulevard center will add 70,000 square feet of space, bringing the property to 540,000 square feet. Thirteen new tenants will come on line as well, taking the center past 140 stores. Among the stores scheduled to debut in March are Guess, New Balance, True Religion and Under Armour. Michael Kors, Loft Outlet and Coach Men's will follow in April. Puma and Toys R Us will also open outposts at the center, though Simon executives didn't give firm opening dates for either company.

In all, the expansion will create more than 100 new retail jobs, Simon officials said.

Simon wouldn't disclose how much the company is spending on the upgrades.

But tenants at the center said investing in remodeling is a good strategy, even as consumer spending and visitor volumes in Las Vegas remain below their prerecession highs.

"I think it's a great time for the expansion, because the south Strip area is growing. This is a hub area between Mandalay Bay and the M Resort," said Rob Mullaney, owner of Hi-Lites Salon and Beauty Store. "It's also good to take advantage of challenging economic times to improve the physical building, bring in new retailers and create a better all-around experience. It gives us a leg up on the competition, because our center is newer and upgraded. Not a lot of retail centers in Las Vegas can say that right now."

Mullaney said he expects his business to increase 10 percent to 12 percent in the 18 months after the expansion's opening.

At Uniform Sports, which sells licensed team apparel and accessories, sales should also improve in the two years following the unveiling of the mall's new brand, store owner Bruce Mianecki said.

The Liz Claiborne store across the way from Uniform Sports has cleared out, but the space is set for takeover by an upscale retailer of men's and women's clothes and accessories. The change should bring in a demographic better suited to Mianecki's store, he said.

"If they've got the funds to do it, this is a great time to expand," Mianecki said. "Retail is on the rise in the Las Vegas Valley. Everyone I know in retail has posted gains since last year."

Renaming the 18-year-old property should also help with brand identity, Mianecki said.

"Having the 'premium' name will make a difference," he said. "Everyone still calls us Belz," a reference to prior owner Belz Enterprises, which operated the center as the Belz Factory Outlet Mall. Belz sold the center to Chelsea Property Group in 2003, and Simon bought Chelsea in 2004.

Since it acquired the property, Simon has slowly been making over the mall's tenant list. Gone are the tool sellers and kitchen-goods retailers, replaced by trendy brands including Coach, DKNY, Sean John and Kenneth Cole.

"I think customers are looking more for clothes than, say, dishes," Mullaney said. "The tenant mix has changed nicely over the last three to four years, into the kinds of brands and shopping experiences that people are looking for today."

But Mianecki said the transformation has left less room for smaller, individual retailers such as Uniform Sports, and he's concerned that trend will continue. His lease is good for another four years, but his rent rates jump 3 percent a year, and he frets that when it's time to renew his deal, lease rates might skyrocket so much that he'll have to move.

"It seems like they're squeezing the mom and pops out like all the other big boys do. They're looking at more corporate-type stores," Mianecki said. "I feel that's bad. The bottom line is, businesses like mine are the backbone of the United States. Small to medium businesses are what made this country great."

On top of adding space and stores, Simon is painting the mall's interior, expanding its parking lot and replacing inside lighting with high-efficiency compact fluorescent fixtures to lower the property's energy use.
In addition to both Las Vegas Premium Outlet malls, Simon owns the Forum Shops at Caesars.

Even Albertville Premium Outlets in Minnesota have had enough winter.

By Jeff Roberts -St. Michael Patch

Much like the myriad cars and trucks peppering the ditches of east and westbound Highway 94, Albertville's Premium Outlets Mall found itself at the mercy of Old Man Winter on President's Day.

Parking lots packed to capacity as recently as Saturday were offering plenty of premium spaces Monday as the winter storm continues to move through Minnesota. Shops packed with patrons on Friday and Saturday now found themselves with more staff than customers at midday on Monday.

"This time of year, we know that weather can be a factor and we plan ahead for it. The weekend sale started on Friday with Saturday being a particularly stong day as the warmer temperatures had people thinking spring," Sally Dufner, general manager of Albertville Premium Outlets, told Patch

Despite the dreary look of things outside, not all patrons were put off by the wintry weather.

"I think the media has sensationalized this storm a little bit. This is pretty normal for a winter storm," said Jim, an Albertville shopper who's family is visiting the mall on its way home to Winnipeg, Can. "I look outside and I think that actually this storm is not that bad."

Dufner also had plenty of reason for optimism after individual retail outlets sought their own remedy to the weather.

"Some stores are keeping the sales going as well so it makes sense to watch our website for store-specific sales information," she said.

As the snow mounts and the wind continues to blow, Minneapolis-based weather outlets are predicting an additional one to three inches of the white stuff by midnight.

Meanwhile the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is urging drivers between Clearwater and St. Michael to expect "difficult" driving conditions. MnDOT is warning drivers against blowing snow, packed snow on the road and icy patches beneath fresh snow.

Drivers seem to be heeding the warnings because as there are no crashes and only minimal weather-related delays on I-94 between Albertville and Minneapolis as of 4 p.m. Monday.

Shoplifters mace employee at Jackson Premium Outlets

Three individuals were arrested in connection with a robbery in Jackson on the afternoon of Feb. 5.

Jackson Police Department public information officer Capt. David Newman reported that Jackson police responded to the Aeropostale store at the Jackson Premium Outlets, Route 537, at 3:56 p.m. Feb. 5 on a report of a robbery.

Newman said Aeropostale employees reported that the suspects, described as two black females, used a chemical spray to subdue a store employee who observed them shoplifting merchandise valued at $167.49.

According to police, the two women then fled the store and entered a tan Toyota Corolla that was being operated by a white male.

Jackson Police Officer Donald Lasko, who was dispatched to the call, observed a vehicle that fit the description of the suspects’ vehicle passing him on West Commodore Boulevard. Lasko turned and followed the vehicle.

Newman said the driver of the suspects’ vehicle made an evasive turn onto Hallmark Court, a dead-end street.

Lasko then stopped the vehicle. When back-up units arrived, the suspects were removed from the vehicle and arrested.

Police said the driver, Bruce Post III, 37, of Trenton, was charged with robbery and conspiracy. His bail was set at $100,000 and he was initially placed in the Ocean County jail in default of bail.

Nakiah Goggans, 18, of Trenton, was charged with robbery, conspiracy and shoplifting. Her bail was set at $75,000 and she was initially lodged in the Ocean County jail in default of bail.

A17-year-old female from Trenton who police did not identify by name was taken into custody and issued a juvenile delinquency complaint for robbery, conspiracy and shoplifting. The juvenile was turned over to the custody of the Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center.

Aurora Farms Premium Outlets gets complaints about duck and geese health.

by HOLLY SCHOENSTEIN -TheGatewayNews.com

Aurora -- The Portage Animal Protective League visited Aurora Farms Premium Outlets Feb. 4 to investigate multiple complaints about the health and well being of ducks and geese there.

Jeff Hartung, humane officer for the PAPL, said no citations were issued. The PAPL requested the Outlets on South Chillicothe Road to provide adequate shelter in the form of hutches with straw and food daily for the animals.

"[The animals] have no shelter from predators," Hartung said, adding he saw no food for them on the premises Feb. 4. "I saw what I needed to see. They're not being taken care of."

The Outlets put straw on the pond's ice the morning of Feb. 5, said Lisa Kusner, general manager of the Outlets, through a spokesman. She said the Outlets have met the PAPL's requirements.

"Aurora Farms Premium Outlets works with a state-certified wildlife professional. Food is provided regularly. We work to ensure access to open water and provide ample shelter under the deck," Kusner said.

She acknowledged the business has received numerous complaints about the animals over the years, but the PAPL hasn't cited the business.

Hartung said the APL received 12 complaints via e-mail and telephone since Feb. 2. He also was sent photographs of dead ducks allegedly floating in a pond on the property during that time period.

At least three or four animals have been reported dead, and one domestic goose and one duck appear to have broken wings, he said.

HARTUNG said it's not known what caused the animals' apparent injuries and deaths.

Kusner said when birds die of natural causes, the business tries to remove them promptly. About 100 wild and domestic ducks and geese inhabited the pond area on Feb. 4.

Hartung and Annette Fisher, executive director for Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary in Ravenna, removed one of the animals that appeared to have broken wings.

Fisher said it was taken to a veterinarian for treatment and then to a rehabilitation center. It could be adopted in the future.

Kusner said the animal doesn't have broken wings, but its appearance is because of a birth defect.

According to Hartung, Aurora Farms is responsible for the health and well being of the non-flying animals on the property because they are contained by a fence around the pond and can't get out to seek food and shelter.

However, Kusner disputed that, saying the business does not bring the birds there. She noted domestic animals sometimes are brought there by law enforcement agencies which find them on the road or by people who no longer want them as pets.

Kusner said if there isn't food for them, they would leave, but the animal welfare advocates said the non-flying animals can't leave because they're fenced in.

Kusner said the fence around the pond is to keep patrons safe and prevent them from entering the water.

Blasting violation stops construction at Merrimack Premium Outlets again.

MERRIMACK – A blasting violation, recorded late last week, has forced work to stop once again at Merrimack Premium Outlets, the controversial outlet mall under construction in South Merrimack.

Work crews, which started blasting this fall at the construction site off Exit 10 of the F.E. Everett Turnpike, exceeded the permitted decibel levels with an explosion Friday afternoon, violating the town’s development agreement and causing houses to rattle throughout the area, according to neighbors’ complaints.

As a result, Fire Chief Michael Currier, the town’s blasting agent, has declined this week to approve the permit necessary to continue the blasting work. Currier will not do so, he said, until the blasting firm, Maine Drilling and Blasting of Auburn, submits a revised blasting plan, including more preventative actions to better guard against further violations.

“They seem to have issues with (staying within the blasting levels),” Currier said this morning. “If they can’t do fix it themselves, we’ll have to do it for them.”

The violation, which exceeded the permitted level by 1.8 decibels, is the fourth such breach recorded since blasting started in November. In December, three violations – two for noise, one for vibration levels – prompted Currier to pull the blasting permit, stopping work for several weeks.

Work commenced once again in late December after project planners tweaked their blasting plan.

Wrentham Premium Outlets closed as safety precaution

The Providence Journal by Paul Grimaldi

On Wednesday 2/2/11 Wrentham Village Premium Outlets closed "as a precaution" so workers there could clear snow and ice off roofs at the outdoor shopping center off Route 495.

"We asked everyone to leave the property," said Michele Rothstein, spokeswoman for Premium Outlets, a division of Simon Property Group Inc.

A report of damage to a building elsewhere in Wrentham prompted Wrentham Village managers to close the center, Rothstein said. Thus far, no damage has been found at the shopping center.

"We will assess the situation and make the determination about when to reopen," she said.
