Looking back in the year 2010, we have witnessed that the term ‘charity’ has become an increasingly popular keyword in Chinese society, from Bill Gates and Warren Buffett's charity banquet, to all-out donations and to civil charities.
This public topic has also attracted the attention of Sinopacific: how can we perform our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for the purpose of philanthropy?
Many people may think that CSR means simply doing good deeds and making donations… However, Sinopacific believes in CSR means clinging to the business ethics which includes clinging to lawful business operation, advocating product safety, environmental protection, protection of employee benefits, integrity and responsibility to all stakeholders and etc. The enterprise provides more tax revenue and employment opportunities through legitimate business activities, which fully embodies the CSR, and thus to maximize the desire to contribute to the community. Enterprise will do philanthropy activities while clinging to CSR. Enterprise also makes philanthropy activities a kind of business, which provides a driving force for long-term sustainable development of enterprises, as well as promoting the enterprise development to a new level.
“Enterprises cannot conduct philanthropy activities without a definite target. Activities should be strongly associated with the business. The charity result will be more effective only when the enterprise operation performance is good. On the other hand, the accumulated positive effect of charity events will benefit the growth of enterprises. This is a healthy and sustainable charity mode," said Simon Liang, Chairman & CEO of Sinopacific Shipbuilding Group.
Sinopacific's approach to philanthropy has always been focused on the operation value of the enterprise. In other words, “Our philanthropy projects are targeted at groups we are familiar with and the communities we live in. This not only ensures that the projects help people in need, but also allows us to provide strong supervision. As the old Chinese saying goes, “to use the best steel on the sword’s cutting edge” said Lin Bo, Executive Manager of Sinopacific. For example, migrant workers are the main workforce in the shipbuilding sector. Before the Chinese New Year, Dayang Shipbuilding, an affiliated shipyard of Sinopacific, gave out red envelopes to a dozen of migrant workers to support their trips home for family reunion through the Dayang Migrant Workers Caring Fund. After the Festival, they had come back to work with full of spirit, being active to start work. With migrant workers' needs in mind, this practical philanthropy event achieved mutual benefit for the enterprise and workers.
In 2010, Sinopacific established a specialized fellowship in Harbin Engineering University designed to encourage students majoring in ship related specialties to join the promising shipbuilding sector. With the excellent graduates majoring in shipbuilding, this well-known college represents the future of China’s shipbuilding sector. This fellowship represents Sinopacific's commitment to training specialized talents and actively promoting sustainable corporate development. In addition, the establishment of Fenghua Education Fund and Sinopacific Shipbuilding Technical School announced Sinopacific’s philanthropy philosophy from different aspects: provide what we do best to people we know.
This end of February, the Global CEO Conference will be held in New York under the theme of “Business at its best: maximizing long-term profit and social impact”. The conference provides enterprises and organizations with opportunity to discuss the integration of charity and business in order to achieve a positive relationship. Mr. Simon Liang will be attending this conference in the hope of acquiring inspiration to discover an approach to corporate philanthropy that best suits China’s enterprises.
